Press release, 19 October 2021

On Tuesday and Wednesday, 19–20 October 2021, Vilnius is hosting the 24th Session of the Assembly of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania and the Sejm and Senate of the Republic of Poland. It is the first non-remote session of the Assembly since September 2019. Andrzej Duda, President of the Republic of Poland, and the delegations led by Małgorzata Gosiewska, Deputy Marshal of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland, and Bogdan Borusewicz, Deputy Marshal of the Senate of the Republic of Poland, will come to Vilnius for an official visit.

During the Session, members of the delegations to the Assembly will participate in the events dedicated to mark the 230th Anniversary of the Mutual Pledge of the Two Nations, discuss the most important matters of bilateral relations, and focus on the cooperation between Lithuania and Poland in dealing with the illegal migration flows caused by the Belarusian regime. Members of the Session are expected to sign a Joint Declaration.

Lithuania and Poland also celebrate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year.

‘Lithuania and Poland are strategic partners. As we commemorate our shared history, we must unite our efforts to meet the common challenges and actively cooperate in the fields of security, defence, energy and other. The wave of irregular migration generated by the Belarusian regime has hit both Lithuania and Poland. Although we have to bear the burden on our own today, it is good to remember that there is always a brotherly shoulder to rely on. Lithuania and Poland are actively cooperating to overcome this challenge and to inspire a common response from the European Union. Therefore, this Session of the Lithuanian-Polish Parliamentary Assembly will also focus on the problem of illegal migration. We are stronger when we stand together,’ emphasised Paulius Saudargas, Head of the Seimas Delegation to the Assembly of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania and the Sejm and Senate of the Republic of Poland.
