“Vilnius Public Transport” has announced the purchase of 73 new trolleybuses. This competition is a continuation of the company-managed trolleybus fleet renewal project. The contract with the winner is planned to be signed in the first quarter of next year.
“Comfort, safety, and environmental friendliness are important criteria that determine the choice of public transport for city trips. We continue the renovation of the trolleybus depot so that as many people as possible would choose public transport for their daily trips. We are consistently investing in less polluting transport - we plan that by the year 2030, not less than 55 percent of all public transport vehicles will be powered by electricity,” says Vilnius City Mayor Valdas Benkunskas.
The trolleybuses planned to be purchased will be joint three-axle low-floor, 18 meters long, rolling autonomously, and capable of traveling up to 20 km without a contact network. Their heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems will need to be electric to ensure comfort during all seasons. There must be at least 40 seats, including the driver’s seat, and at least 70 standing places.
In the new trolleybuses, a ramp will ensure smooth movement for persons with individual needs and families with small children. Charging connections for smart devices will also have to be provided for the convenience of passengers.
“We aim for every citizen of Vilnius to be able to enjoy a convenient and ecological public transport system. We have already taken significant steps – last year we purchased 91 “Škoda 32Tr“ trolleybuses, some of which are already used for daily city trips. By the end of 2026, we plan to completely renew the trolleybus fleet. This will allow citizens and guests to travel even more comfortably and will contribute to a cleaner environment,” says Ignas Degutis, director of “Vilnius Public Transport”.
We remind you that in 2023 “Vilnius Public Transport” company purchased 91 trolleybuses from “Škoda Group”. Currently, there are 35 new “Škoda 32Tr“ trolleybuses in the streets of Vilnius. After the last newly purchased trolleybuses roll out to the streets in March of next year, slightly more than 70 old trolleybuses will still be running in Vilnius. It is planned that all of them will be replaced by the newly purchased trolleybuses by the end of 2026.
