Galerija VARTAI. Warsaw: The Day After...

Galerija VARTAI, Vilnius

11 April – 11 May, 2013

Opening 11 April, Thursday, 2pm, 2013

The show will be opened by Major of Vilnius city Artūras Zuokas and Mayor of Warsaw city Hanna Gronkiewicz - Waltz

On April 11, a contemporary Polish art exhibition dedicated to the 15th anniversary of cooperation between the cities of Vilnius and Warsaw will be opened in Galerija VARTAI. Twelve artists developing the idea of a modern metropolis through installations, objects, as well as video and photography works will be introduced by the curators of the exhibition, the founders of BWA Warszawa Gallery, Justyna Kowalska, Tomasz Plata and Michał Suchora.

An array of visions of the metropolis, one the one hand - utopian, construed on the basis of hope for the radical transformation of the city. On the other hand, dystopian, documenting the disappearance of a prior order. Warsaw becomes the heroine of this exhibition. Her recent history has founded a discussion on the links between art and architecture, the political dimension of public space and the toppling of the modernist tradition (and its ensuing revival). The title of the exhibition refers to a popular film depicting an atomic apocalypse of the city, bringing together two visions: the city and its destruction.

Exhibition artists: Ewa Axelrad & Steve Press, Jan Dziaczkowski, Nicolas Grospierre, Agnieszka Kalinowska, Szymon Kobylarz, Zbigniew Libera, Aleksandra Polisiewicz, Konrad Pustoła, Kama Sokolnicka, Małgorzata Szymankiewicz, Wojtek Ziemilski

Exhibition curators: Justyna Kowalska, Tomasz Plata and Michał Suchora
