Today, on 12th of August, Remigijus Motuzas, the Chair of the Seimas Committee on Foreign Affairs, together with the Chairs of the Foreign Affairs Committees of other European parliaments, issued a joint statement urging the leaders of the international community to pursue a ceasefire agreement that firmly safeguards Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The statement underlines that any agreements reached during or after the negotiations scheduled to begin on 15th of August in Alaska must be based on the principles of the United Nations Charter, uphold the Ukrainian Constitution, and prevent Russia—engaged in reckless and unlawful aggression—from securing any territorial gains.
“Today we must remain firm and united – any compromise that undermines international law or Ukraine’s territorial integrity would be a historic mistake we cannot permit,” stressed Mr Motuzas.
The statement also affirms that the future of Ukraine and Europe must not be decided without the direct participation of the countries concerned. “Only the Ukrainian people can determine the future of Ukraine, in line with the fundamental principle – nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine,” the statement reads. It further notes that European countries must take part in the negotiations to minimise the risk that Russian aggression poses to European security.
In this joint statement, the Chairs of the Foreign Affairs Committees call on the leaders of the free world to demonstrate unity, determination, and loyalty to the rule of law and universal human rights.
The statement was signed by the Chairs of the Foreign Affairs Committees of the parliaments of Lithuania, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Iceland, the United Kingdom, Latvia, Poland, Luxembourg, Moldova, Norway, France, Finland, Sweden, Ukraine, as well as the Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs.
