Minister of Transport and Communications Marius Skuodis on 5G frequency auction announcement in Lithuania

Yesterday, the Communications Regulatory Authority (RRT) announced an auction for the right to use the radio frequencies (channels) in the radio spectrum bands 713–733 MHz and 768–88 MHz. Minister of Transport and Communications Marius Skuodis welcomes this important step to ensure the development and provision of the 5th generation mobile connection (5G) in the country.

“Congratulations on this significant first step. Today begins the countdown to the moment when commercial 5G services start operating in Lithuania. We expect to have 5G in our country by the summer of the next year,” said Minister Skuodis.

On 12 October, the Ministry of Transport and Communications and other institutions of the public sector, along with providers of telecommunication services, signed a Memorandum on strategic actions regarding the development of 5G across Lithuania. By 2022, 5G should be accessible in at least one major Lithuanian city, and by 2025, a 100 Mbps speed connection should be accessible in at least 95 percent of Lithuanian households.

It is planned that by 2025, 5G will cover all cities, international transport corridors Via Baltica, Rail Baltica, state roads, rail roads, airports and seaports.

At the time of signing the Memorandum, RRT informed that the frequency auction will be announced within the next few weeks and so will begin the implementation of the objectives set out in the Memorandum.

The Memorandum on implementing 5G in Lithuania was signed by the Ministry of Transport and Communications, companies Telia, Bitė and Tele2, Public Enterprise Plačiajuostis internetas, State Enterprise Lithuanian Road Administration, AB LTG Infra, Association of Local Authorities in Lithuania.

All Lithuanian municipalities are invited to join the Memorandum and cooperate.

In its efforts to expedite the development of electronic communications infrastructure in the country, the Ministry of Transport and Communications seeks that the 5G connection development project is awarded the status of national importance.
